Is It Really Self-Sabotage? Or a Survival Strategy That Once Protected You?

If you’ve ever said, “Why do I keep doing this to myself?”—you’re not alone.

Whether it’s procrastination, people-pleasing, shutting down, or avoiding responsibilities, many of us carry behaviors we don’t understand. They feel frustrating, confusing, and often deeply shameful. They’re labeled “self-sabotage,” and we often assume they reflect weakness, laziness, or a lack of willpower.

But at AMR Therapy & Support Services, we take a different view.

What if what you call “self-sabotage” is actually a survival strategy—one that once kept you emotionally or physically safe?

Survival Strategies Disguised as “Bad Habits”

When you grew up navigating trauma, high-stress environments, systemic oppression, or simply environments where your needs weren’t consistently met, your brain and body did something incredible: they adapted.

You may have learned to:

  • Numb out or disconnect (because feeling was too overwhelming)
  • Avoid conflict (because it wasn’t safe to disagree)
  • Overachieve or people-please (because being needed made you feel safe)
  • Procrastinate (because perfectionism made action feel terrifying)

In those moments, these weren’t flaws. They were tools. They protected you.

Now, even if the danger is no longer present, your body might still be running on old scripts. And those scripts might look like self-sabotage—but they were once strategies that helped you survive.

The Problem with the Term “Self-Sabotage”

Labeling these patterns as self-sabotage:

  • Assumes you’re consciously trying to hurt yourself
  • Reinforces shame and internalized blame
  • Ignores the trauma-informed context of behavior
  • Discounts the wisdom of your nervous system

The truth? You’re not broken. You’re responding in ways that made sense at the time.

When we reframe these patterns as outdated survival strategies, we make space for compassion, curiosity, and healing.

This Is Especially True for Marginalized Clients

At AMR Therapy & Support Services, we work with many clients who have been misunderstood or pathologized in past therapeutic spaces. For queer, trans, BIPOC, neurodivergent, and disabled clients, “self-sabotage” is often the internalized impact of navigating systems that were never built for you.

What looks like avoidance might actually be:

  • Navigating chronic invalidation or microaggressions
  • Masking in order to feel safe in unsafe environments
  • Repeating strategies that once protected your identity

A trauma-informed, culturally aware therapist will recognize this—not shame you for it.

So What Now? Naming It Is the First Step

Identifying that a behavior may be an old strategy—and not a moral failure—gives you options.

In therapy, we can:

  • Explore where the strategy came from
  • Acknowledge how it helped you survive
  • Check if it’s still serving you now
  • Learn new tools that align with your current needs

This isn’t about blaming the past. It’s about understanding it so you can choose a different future.
