Burnout, anxiety, depression, chronic physical pain and a variety of other ailments plague so many of us. We go to doctors to treat our bodies, therapists to improve our mental and emotional health, nutritionists and fitness trainers to guide us on how to eat healthily and get enough physical activity. We may also seek spiritual enlightenment via practices like yoga and meditation, or by joining spiritual or religious communities. This piecemeal approach to self-care begins to look like a car that gets sent to the mechanic for engine work, the body shop for cosmetic repairs, and a detail shop to thoroughly clean and restore its interior.
Why I Became a Holistic Health Coach
My own frustrations with this haphazard approach to health propelled me on my journey to becoming a holistic health coach. As a young athlete, my performance was valued above my psychological well-being. As a patient, my doctors focused solely on treating my illnesses and injuries rather than also attending to their emotional and spiritual impacts. In spiritual communities, I noticed that transcendence was prized over physical and mental health.
Over much time and experimentation, I’ve managed to cobble these various aspects of myself together. In doing so, I understand the importance of a more balanced, integrated, and holistic approach to health and wellness that doesn’t compel me to subjugate any one part of myself for another.
What is Holistic Health?
The term holistic health acknowledges that the different parts of who we are not silos operating independently of one another. Wholeness is our true nature. And where we begin our health and wellness journey is rarely where we end up. It is the gateway to reconnecting with our whole self.
Feeling Disconnected
When we become disconnected from our inner state of wholeness, we start to struggle and suffer. This may show up as physical pain, illness, or mental and emotional distress. It can also manifest as problems within our relationships at work or at home, or difficulty in establishing work-life balance. Whatever issue we initially address for self-improvement often leads us to make associations with other areas where we also have challenges. To put a more positive sounding spin on this, improvement in one part of our lives often brings improvement to other parts. It’s contagious, in a healthy way.
Start Small
The hardest task is to start. If we recognize that the entry point is a gateway to profound holistic awareness and growth, we can rest easy knowing that we don’t have to tackle everything all at once. Since wholeness is our nature, everything is inherently interconnected. For instance, making small changes to our nutrition or physical fitness can lead to positive changes in our psychological health.
Return to Wholeness
When we begin to experience this positive shift, we establish momentum and confidence that propels us forward on a path of self-discovery and authenticity. This becomes a lifestyle that feels sustainable, transformative, and like returning home.
