Therapy Truth

For anyone who has not attended therapy before, it can seem intimidating, especially with all the misinformation out there.  People often associate therapy with mental illness, ironically this is not usually the case.  Therapy has become essential to navigating life during hard experiences like Covid-19.  A good therapist can help you relieve stress, gain control of your anger, mend relationships, teach you better communication skills and help you achieve goals.

Through building a positive and honest relationship, you and your therapist will explore goals and explore the past and present in ways that will benefit you.  You are encouraged to be empowered in sessions, with the therapist moving you forward and toward your goals.  Therapy can only take you where you want to go.  Therapists should not tell you how to think or how to feel, rather help you to discover your authentic feelings.  Therapy should not be coercive.  Therapy is a process and the situation or unhealthy behavior you have dealt with for years may not go away overnight.  Therapy is a lot of work and you may need to identify feelings that you never looked at, learn to communicate more effectively, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone in order to attain the goals that brought you into therapy. All along the way, a therapist will be there to support you until you feel that you do not need therapy anymore.  IF you are worried about the cost of therapy, we have good news there too.  Most therapists have low-cost options, or a sliding scale based on how much you earn.  AMR also takes FHS, HAS, and out of network insurance.

Therapy is one of the best ways that you can practice self-care and change your life and brain for the better.  A lot of today’s therapeutic techniques and coping skills work with the brain to rewire it for the better.  We all deserve a better brain, don’t we?
